Prague, Oct 4 (CTK) – Four out of ten Czechs have experienced some form of sexual harassment or violence (39 percent), one out of 11 experienced rape and only 5 percent of rape victims reported the crime, according to a survey that the Persefona group presented at a Senate hearing on sexual violence on Tuesday.
“The survey indicated that 800,000 rapes were probably committed in the Czech Republic,” Persefona head Jitka Cechova said.
Contrary to the prevailing opinion, most of the perpetrators of sexual violence are people who are not unknown to the victim, she said.
Two thirds of the rapes are committed at home and the husband or male partner is mostly the perpetrator, Cechova said.
The survey, conducted by the Focus agency, showed that 64 percent of those who were victims of sexual violence during their childhood also had experience with such violence as adults.
The Persefona group provides aid to victims of domestic violence and rape in the Czech Republic.
