Some 8.3 million persons worked as teaching staff (from pre-primary to tertiary level) in the European Union, of which 5.8 million or 70 percent were women, according to the most recent comprehensive Eurostat statistics from 2013. The percent of women in teaching staff in the Czech Republic is well-above the EU average in all but tertiary education, and the number of teachers over 50 years of age is slightly above the EU average.
