Cesky Krumlov, South Bohemia, Oct 6 (CTK) – A memorial to the Iron Curtain, recalling the key moments of the local history, was unveiled at the Czech-Austrian border crossing Guglwald Tuesday, Cesky Krumlov Town Hall spokeswoman Petra Nestavalova has told CTK.

“It is important that people don’t forget what happened in this region,” Nestavalova said.

Seven panels with pictures and texts in Czech and German present historical developments of the 20th century, such as the deportation of ethnic Germans from this border region after the war, the construction of the Iron Curtain and its dismantling after the 1989 fall of the Czechoslovak communist regime.

A number of Austrian and Czech groups contributed to the creation of the memorial located near the village of Predni Vyton.

This is not the only project of its kind in the South Bohemia Region.

At the former border crossing Bucina, the Iron Curtain Museum opened several years ago. Tourists can see a barbed-wire fence, a barrier and a watchtower that were part of the border protection to stop anybody from fleeing to Germany in the country’s communist era.
