Prague, Feb 7 (CTK) – Firmly set fines for the most serious violation of traffic rules will be raised from 2,500 to 5,000 crowns under the joint proposal of the Transport Ministry and traffic police, Transport Minister Dan Tok (ANO) told Czech Television (CT) on Sunday.
The government will discuss the proposal later this year, Tok said.
Former transport minister Zbynek Stanjura (Civic Democratic Party, ODS) said the state should prefer prevention to reprisals.
The fine of 5,000 crowns is to be paid instantly for speeding crossing the permitted level by 40 kph within a municipality and by 50 kph outside it.
The fine for holding a cell phone while driving will increase from 1000 to 2500 crowns, while that for failure to use safety belts will diminish by 500 to 1500 crowns.
The upper limit of the fine for drink driving is to rise from 50,000 to 75,000 crowns if there is more than one per mille of alcohol in blood. If it is under one per mille, it is to rise from 20,000 to 25,000 crowns.
By the end of last year, 539,277 drivers were punished with points in the point system, which was 8 percent of their total number. Over 39,500 motorists reached 12 points, due to which they lost their driving licence.
