Berlin, Sept 8 (CTK correspondent) – The number of Czech doctors working in the neighbouring Germany, mainly in the Saxony and Bavaria federal states, has been constantly rising in the past few years, totalling over 920, according to the data from the German Doctors’ Chamber (BAK) released to CTK.

Some 500 Czech doctors left for Germany in the past five years alone. Their departures are motivated mainly by higher salaries and better working conditions there than in the Czech Republic.

“The main reasons are greater freedom and the possibility of choice. I have thereby in mind that thanks to a high salary, you need not take a mortgage or can give a notice without fearing that you will soon run out of your savings,” Czech anaesthesiologist Otakar Malek, 32, said, explaining the reasons why he decided to work in a hospital in Dresden.

Besides finances, more free time for his family and hobbies than he would have if he stayed in a Czech hospital played a role in his decision-making, he added.

In Dresden, he works for about 50 hours a day, but he has a weekend duty only once a month.

According to the BAK’s data, 422 doctors from the Czech Republic worked in Germany at the end of 2010, while as of December 31, 2015 it was 921.

A regular rise in their number is registered every year.

At the end of 2011, 606 Czech doctors were registered in Germany, a year later it was 699, in 2013 their number amounted to 788 and it was 850 in 2014.

Out of the 921 Czech doctors in Germany at the end of 2015 and beginning of 2016, almost 800 worked in hospitals and 53 were running their own surgeries. The remaining 70 worked, for instance, with emergency service or in other medical professions.

More than two-thirds of Czech doctors employed in Germany have accepted jobs in the federal states bordering on the Czech Republic – 333 work in Saxony and 334 in Bavaria. Over 30 Czech doctors work in Thuringia (41), Baden-Wurttemberg, Hesse (38 each) and Brandenburg (32), while the lowest number of Czech doctors is in Bremen and Hamburg (two in each).
