Prague, Feb 11 (CTK) – The Regional Court in Prague ruled on Thursday that Czech judge Ondrej Havlin will spend five years and three months in prison over corruption and the illegal influencing of cases instead of the original 6.5 years in prison.
If Havlin fails to pay the penalty of 350,000 crowns, his stay behind bars will be prolonged by ten months.
In July 2015, Havlin was punished for having unlawfully influenced the proceedings against crime perpetrators in exchange for bribes.
He was sentenced for bribe taking, bribe giving, abuse of power and illegal arms possession.
Along with Havlin, the charges were faced by another six defendants. Of them, only state attorney Frantisek Fiala was sentenced to a prison term.
The court of appeals has confirmed the punishment of three years and nine months for Fiala.
The rest of the defendants received suspended sentences.
In his previous career, Havlin also worked as a diplomat.
