Prague, June 15 (CTK) – The Czech Senate approved an amendment to the law on firearms on Wednesday that introduces stricter rules for the owners of legal guns and gives the police the right to seize a legal firearm from its owner in the person’s home without a court order under certain conditions.

The change was initiated by the government in reaction to a shooting tragedy that occurred in Uhersky Brod, south Moravia, in February 2015. A local 63-year-old man, who had psychological troubles for a long time, shot dead eight people in a randomly chosen pub with his legally owned gun.

The amendment still needs to be signed by the president to take effect.

Some senators challenged the new power of the police and said it might be abused.

The amendment also deals with the conditions under which gun licences are granted and extended and with the rules for registering and storing ammunition.

The changes in handling ammunition were made in reaction to explosions that occurred in private ammunition stores in Vrbetice, south Moravia, in 2014.
