Prague, May 17 (CTK) – Former Czech human rights minister Dzamila Stehlikova received the bePROUD award for her lifetime contribution to the LGBT community (gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transsexuals) on Tuesday, activist Petr Lane has told CTK.
The Society for Queer Memory was awarded for the biggest act last year for its opening the Queer Memory Center.
The anti-prize protiPROUD was given to psychologist Jaroslav Sturma, Lane, from the Platform for Equality, Recognition and Diversity (PROUD), said on the international day against homophobia.
“From her position of doctor and politician, Dzamila Stehlikova has been working on behalf of the LGBT community in the Czech Republic for many years,” organisers said.
Stehlikova started cooperating with the movement in the mid-1990s. She took part in a survey on the situation of gay communities.
As a human rights minister, she contributed to the enactment of the anti-discrimination law, had an analysis of the minority drafted and insisted on the resulting recommendations.
She was also a manager of the national programme of the struggle with AIDS.
Sturma, former head of the Bohemian and Moravian Psychological Society, received the anti-prize for his “long-term negative attitudes to and statements about LGBT persons,” Lane said.
The award for employers went to the Vodafone cell phone company. As one of the few companies, it has a special document on the rights and situation of LGBT persons.
“Corporal benefits are also available for the people from the LGBT community there,” Lane said.
