Prague, Dec 17 (CTK) – Less than 20 percent of Czechs would regret it if the European Union fell apart, a half would feel neutral about it, 22 percent would feel relief and 6 percent would hail the end of the EU, according to a public opinion poll conducted by the Institute of Sociology.
The EU collapse would be most regretted by young people, university graduates living in cities, the people who often follow news on the Internet and those with the best information about politics.
In terms of voter preferences, the EU´s end would be most regretted by supporters of the right-wing opposition TOP 09.
Followers of the left opposition Communists (KSCM) would regret it the least of all, as would pensioners, the people who are not interested in politics or do not follow news on the Internet, the poll showed.
One quarter of Czechs believe that it is good to be a part of the EU, while another quarter believe the opposite and a half have no clear opinion about the issue.
“In their opinion on the advantages of EU membership, the Czechs are sharply divided into two groups. Fifty-six percent agree with the view that the Czech Republic has benefited from its EU membership [since its entry in 2004], and 44 percent believe that the membership has brought no advantages,” the authors of the poll said.
The poll was conducted on 1051 respondents from November 23 to December 2.
