Brno, Oct 17 (CTK) – About 25,000 people attended the divine service with which the 1st National Eucharistic Congress in the Czech Republic culminated in Brno Saturday, and which was followed by a procession in the city centre, a joint statement of faith and a blessing ceremony.

The congress is the first event of its kind to be held in the Czech Republic.

In countries with strong Catholic communities, similar meetings are usually held regularly, once in four years.

Bohemian and Moravian bishops chose south Moravia, where the church tradition is strong compared with the country’s other regions, as the Czech event’s first venue.

The national congress will be followed up by a world meeting in the Philippines.

Saturday’s mass at Brno’s central namesti Svobody square started with Cardinal Paul Josef Cordes reading a message from Pope Francis.

The Pope wrote that he wanted to encourage all Catholic dignitaries and the believers among the Czech people to take part in the Eucharistic sacrifice often and piously, and clean themselves through the sacrament of reconciliation.

People could watch the divine service and the following procession on large screens installed in the streets.

The procession included 2000 priests, clerics and ministrants.

Apart from divine services, the programme of the National Eucharistic Congress, which started in Brno on Friday, includes lectures and theatre performances.
