‘Rescue digs’ at doomed Czech village of Libkovice atop coal seam unearth historic finds

Founded nearly a millennium ago, Libkovice was the last town slated for liquidation after 1989 to make way for coal mining operations. The destruction allowed for an altogether different kind of excavation – archaeological “rescue digs” – which unearthed a treasure trove of information about life in a human settlement in Europe spanning a millennium.
