Prague, Jan 29 (CTK) – The Czech General Inspection of Security Corps (GIBS) has accused two Prague policemen of blackmailing drivers, forcing them to pay them money without any apparent reasons during police checks, GIBS spokesman Ivo Mitacek told journalists on Monday.

The investigation into the case took two years.

If convicted of abuse of power, bribe-taking and blackmail, the police officers may be sentenced up to ten years in prison. Mitacek said.

According to the detectives, the police in question drove outside their precinct during night-time checks of cars and people.

Based on fabricated information and orchestrated situations, the police demanded money from the checked people they then kept, Mitacek said.

“During the checks, the police manipulated the drivers of the cars into the states in which they were exposed to a pressure. The drivers then confessed even to fabricated delicts and eventually paid the police in cash,” Mitacek said.

The drivers were unable to defend themselves against the arbitrariness.

“They confessed to GIBS agents later that they preferred paying rather than having to face the police power,” Mitacek said.
