Prague, Oct 31 (CTK) – The hysteria provoked by the refugee influx in the Czech Republic is a symptom of Czechs´ inferiority complex and narrowness, opposition TOP 09 chairman Karel Schwarzenberg said at a conference in Prague Saturday.
He added that he felt ashamed of such Czech features.
Schwarzenberg indirectly reacted to the words by President Milos Zeman who recently said Islamic refugees would not respect Czech laws and habits and would introduce sharia law, so women would wear burkas and the unfaithful ones would be stoned to death.
At the opening of the conference entitled “The Czech Republic in Globalisation Era,” Schwarzenberg said fear and inferiority complex were manifested in the Czech Republic of late though only a very low number of refugees had actually arrived in the country, compared to other EU member states.
He also mentioned the fears, expressed by some politicians, of Islamist terrorists entering the Czech Republic within the migrant wave, and of the Islamic law being introduced there.
According to Schwarzenberg, the public debate on migration in the Czech Republic is in a short contradiction with similar debates in Germany and Switzerland. He indicated that he felt ashamed of the Czech approach to the migrant crisis.
Zeman has repeatedly uttered critical remarks on refugees and he has warned of the threats they might pose to Europe. A week ago, he said most refugees would not deserve compassion because as a rule, they were young, healthy men with good material conditions.
Most Czech politicians rejected his stances. They were also criticised by the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid Ra’ad Al-Hussein.
