Prague’s population grew to more than 1.37 million in the first half of the year thanks to relocation

The number of inhabitants in Prague increased by about 16,000 in the first half of this year. At the end of June, more than 1.37 million people lived in the metropolis. More people were born than died, but the increase was mainly due to migration to the capital. This is according to data published today by the Czech Statistical Office.

From the beginning of the year to the end of June, 6,175 children were born in Prague. During the same period, 6,052 people died. The difference, referred to by the statistics as natural increase, amounted to 123 inhabitants. Migration had a significantly greater impact on the population of the capital city. In the first half of the year, 38 713 people moved to the capital. In contrast, 22 759 people moved out.

As a result, the population increased by 15 954. Marriages were recorded by statisticians in the capital during the period under review at 2,627. According to preliminary data, there were more than 1,100 divorces. In the whole Czech Republic, the population rose by 46 000 to 10.87 million in the first half of the year. The increase is due to foreign migration, especially from Ukraine. More people died than were born.
