According to Alexander Lukashenko, Moscow has accomplished its objectives in the so-called special military operation, referred to by Russia as the conflict against Ukraine. Lukashenko believes that now it’s essential for both sides involved in the conflict to engage in diplomatic discussions to address various matters, including the future status of Crimea and other Ukrainian regions claimed by Moscow.

This perspective was shared by the Belarusian President in an interview posted on YouTube by Ukrainian journalist Diana Panchenko, who is known to have pro-Russian leanings.

Lukashenko stated, “The objectives of the Special Military Operation have been met thus far. Following the cessation of hostilities, Ukraine’s approach towards Russia is expected to be less confrontational compared to the period before the conflict. Ukraine will undergo a transformation. Primarily, its leadership will consist of individuals who are more prudent, intelligent, and shrewd, if you will—people who recognize the value of harmonious neighborly relations.”

He emphasized the importance of commencing negotiations without preconditions, adhering to the conventional principles of diplomacy. The Belarusian leader added that these discussions should encompass a comprehensive range of topics, including the likes of Crimea, Kherson, Zaporizhzhya, Donetsk, and Lugansk.

At the same time, Lukashenko disavowed any notion that Russian President Vladimir Putin had coerced him into involving Belarus in the Ukrainian conflict. He asserted that he had no advance awareness of Moscow’s intentions. He only noted that a few days prior to the invasion, the Kremlin’s leader asked him to provide support in case of contingencies. Furthermore, Lukashenko cautioned that the Russian military could potentially occupy the entirety of southern Ukraine, reaching the border with Moldova. He also raised concerns about a potential threat to Ukraine from Poland on its western flank. Lukashenko concluded by expressing his anticipation of Putin’s re-election as Russia’s president in the upcoming elections, projected to occur within six months.
