Prague, Sept 10 (CTK) – Petr Gazdik, head of the Czech Mayors and Independents movement (opposition STAN), has called on European Council President Donald Tusk to play a more active role in seeking a common consistent stance on the refugee crisis, he told CTK Thursday.

“The bodies of the European Union are not working as they should be, and this is why I addressed Mr Tusk as the President of the European Council who should be heard,” said Gazdik, deputy chairman of the lower house of Czech parliament.

In his letter to Tusk, Gazdik writes that the EU has been lacking a common strategy on the immigration issue.

“Instead of a solid common strategy, I can only see separate and totally autonomous steps of certain European countries such as France or even more Germany. Even under these circumstances, the stance of the European Union as a whole has not been heard yet,” Gazdik writes.

He writes that the EU merely discusses refugee quotas, blames East European countries for rejecting the quotas and threatens these countries with taking EU subsidies away from them.

Gazdik asks Tusk to moderate a dialogue of European leaders on the attitude to the refugee influx.

He writes that the EU seems to start falling apart when confronted with problems.

Gazdik warns against extremist parties attracting more supporters due to the migration crisis and Europe’s failure to deal with it.

He writes that “opening the arms of the EU too wide might encourage further and greater immigration waves.”

Gazdik told CTK that he would address mayors from other EU countries if his call on Tusk did not bring any improvement in the current situation. The mayors from all over Europe should let the European Commission and the European Council know that they are disappointed with the lack of common strategy, Gazdik said.
