Prague, Dec 17 (CTK) – Czech President Milos Zeman appointed Professor Josef Fiala, from the Faculty of Law in Brno, as a new Constitutional Court (US) judge on Thursday, Zeman´s spokesman Jiri Ovcacek has told CTK.
Fiala will replace Vladimir Kurka, whose ten-year mandate expired this week.
The 15-member team of Constitutional judges thus remains complete.
Fiala is an expert in civil law. He is heading the civil law chair at the Faculty of Law of Brno´s Masaryk University, is a member of the Government legislative Council and also an arbitrator and a member of analytical commissions.
Fiala worked as an assistant to several Constitutional judges, he has experience from advocacy and led the team of the authors of civil law textbooks.
Fiala is another in the row of academics in the US who make up almost a half of all its judges. The others came from the judiciary or advocacy.
Zeman preferred Fiala to other candidates, including Zdenek Kuehn, from the Supreme Administrative Court. He chose Fiala, for instance, for his deep knowledge of insolvency law and a high academic degree.
A total of 52 senators of the 71 present supported Fiala in a secret ballot.
