Welcome to Talkback, a forum to voice you opinion on today’s Czech news.

This week’s topic:Do you believe Kundera?

The weekly Respekt published an article written by a historian from the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes earlier this month, saying that the famous Czech author Milan Kundera had reported a Western agent to the police in 1950 when he was a student in Prague. Kundera denied the allegations, saying he did not know the person. He also complained about the way Respekt presented the information and decided to sue the publisher unless the weekly apologies.

The dispute sparked a heated debate in Czech and foreign media. Some criticise Respekt for publishing such a sensitive piece of information, based on a communist police document, which some consider untrustworthy, while others argue it is important to talk about the history no matter how sensitive it may be. Do you believe Kundera or the police report?

  • Do you think Respekt did the right thing in publishing the story?
  • Has your opinion of Kundera changed?
  • Do you agree that communist archives should be revealed to the public and discussed in the media?

Your comments on last week’s articles published in Prague Daily Monitor? We received two comments last week regarding the planned US radar base in the Czech Republic. Monitor reader Geoffrey Holland said he understands the concern Czech citizens have about the proposed missile system: “I want to tell you, I would bet it will never happen. It is a reflection of the flawed world view of George Bush, the worst leader in the history of America. A great many Americans are ashamed of what Bush and Cheney have done to our country. They have made all Americans look foolish in the eyes of the world’s people. In a few months, they will be gone. I believe Barack Obama will be the next US President. Obama is as smart as Bush is stupid. Obama will have a big job repairing the extensive damage done by Bush. One thing that will probably happen early on is the repudiation and cancellation of foolish military provocations like this missile system Bush wants in your uniquely beautiful country.”

Reader Robert Majcina, on the other hand, is asking: “Why would people there be against the US to help your country be safe? I can’t understand this. Do they have more trust in Russia?”
