Prague, June 22 (CTK) – Nine children from the refugee families who attend Czech elementary schools were awarded for their results in school by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in the Czech Republic (UNHCR) yesterday.
They were nominated by their class teachers.
The awards were given to the children aged six to 17, who came to the Czech Republic along with their families from Burma, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan that received international protection in the Czech Republic.
They were from the schools in Brno, Usti nad Labem, north Bohemia, Stara Boleslav, central Bohemia, Podebrady, central Bohemia, and Hluk, south Moravia.
The UNHCR in the Czech Republic renewed the awards after several years and it wants to continue with the tradition.
“The UNHCR believes that the event will help encourage and motivate the children from the ranks of holders of international protection to the studies,” the organisation said at the invitation to the event.
“It also wants to contribute to the painting of a positive picture of the refugees in the media and the general public,” it added.
Monika Pham, from the UHNCR, said the teachers had mostly praised the children’s progress in the Czech language.
