Prague, Jan 5 (CTK) – Diplomats have have been negotiating for almost a month about a Czech man, Petr Jasek, 52, who has disappeared in Khartoum, Sudan, where he may be kept in prison, daily Mlada fronta Dnes (MfD) writes yesterday.
Jasek has been reported missing in the Interpol database since December 9, 2015, it adds.
“We do not know yet what exactly is going on. We have been monitoring the case in detail. We were dealing with it over the Christmas holiday as well,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Michaela Lagronova told the paper.
A Czech representative from the embassy in Egypt is on the spot in Sudan, she said.
“I can only say we know that the man is alive,” she added.
The reasons why Jasek went to Sudan and why he was detained are not clear, MfD writes.
According to its sources, the aim of his journey might be religious activities due to which he may have been arrested in the country that applies the elements of the traditional Islamic law sharia.
Jasek is another of Czech citizens who have been missing abroad since last year.
A man from Velke Mezirici, south Moravia, was kidnapped by Islamist militants from an oil field in Libya at the beginning of March and five Czech men went missing in Lebanon in mid-July.
