To me, this quote is not only a statement about life, but it is the essence of continuous learning and quality of life at any age. Recent studies about brain development show conclusively that our brains do not stop developing by the second decade of life but, in fact, are capable of development well beyond the seventh decade, IF we challenge them with learning new things. So, while I like the idea of living in the present, as the first part of Gandhi’s quote suggests, it’s knowing the contribution that continuous learning makes to our mental health and dexterity that is an added bonus.
