The Czech Minister of Finance Alena Schillerová made a 1:40 minute video promoting government bonds as the perfect stocking stuffer this Christmas, noting that a bond is a “smart gift” that “doesn’t get boring after a while.”
In a video posted to social media, Schillerová told followers that if they’re having trouble figuring out what to put under the Christmas tree this year, she’s got them covered.
“For those of you who are looking for a practical gift for parents or friends, the Bond of the Republic may be the right choice,” she said.
Schillerová reminded followers that there were two different types of bonds to choose from depending on what’s right for their loved ones.
“It’s a gift that will gain value over time, especially if you buy a reinvestment bond. Or, if you’re more conservative, you can go with the anti-inflation bond, which guarantees that your investment won’t be devalued by inflation.”
Schillerová conceded that though bonds are an awesome Christmas gift, they may not be the most romantic gift for wives and girlfriends; “Gentlemen, I would probably recommend something a little more personal to your better halves.”
The smallest bond you can buy costs CZK 1,000 and can be purchased through select branches Česká spořitelna and ČSOB branches.
At the time of writing, iDnes.cz’s reader survey for whether or not they plan on buying bonds for their loved ones is at about 95% “No” and 5% “Yes.”
