Despite the wealth of psycholinguistic research suggesting subtitled programs aid in language acquisition, for adults as well as children, the question “to dub or not to dub” is complicated in the Czech Republic by the fact that Czechs are extraordinarily proud of their voice-over artists, as well as by the fact that so much of the programing is foreign, meaning that those who are unable to either read the subtitles or understand the spoken language, such as the elderly, would have much more limited options.
