Prague, March 30 (CTK) – Participation in a Washington nuclear security summit and the dinner of heads of governments in the White House will be the main political events on the agenda of Czech PM Bohuslav Sobotka’s five-day visit to the USA for which he is leaving yesterday.
Sobotka will also meet U.S. investors, film makers and Czech expatriates. He is to visit both the eastern and western coasts of the USA.
The nuclear security summit will be attended by delegations from several international organisations and more than 50 countries including Britain, China and Germany, but unfortunately not Russia, which is the world’s biggest nuclear power together with the USA.
On the eve of the summit, U.S. President Barack Obama will host a dinner of the heads of the delegations present in the White House.
Sobotka (Social Democrats, CSSD) visited the White House already once in his capacity as Czech prime minister during his first trip to the United States in the autumn of 2014. He was received by Vice-President Joe Biden.
No such Czech-U.S. bilateral meeting is scheduled this time. However, on the sidelines of the nuclear summit, Sobotka will have bilateral talks with Swiss President Johann Schneider-Ammann and Azeri President Ilham Aliyev.
In Washington, Sobotka will also give a speech in the prestigious think-tank Brookings Institution.
In the following days, he will meet the governors of California and Minnessota, Jerry Brown and Mark Dayton, respectively.
In California and Minnessota, he will meet members of the 200,000-strong community of local Czech expatriates. He will bestow the Karel Kramar Medal, named after the first Czechoslovak prime minister, on some of them.
Sobotka will also use his U.S. trip to meet representatives of big U.S. film studios, whose film makers Prague would like to attract to shoot films in the Czech Republic.
Sobotka’s meeting with U.S. investors and successful Czech entrepreneurs in the Sillicon Valley, and his visit to the SpaceX company, which focuses on space conquest, will aim to boost business and trade.
During the visit to SpaceX, Sobotka might meet U.S. visionary and entrepreneur Elon Musk.
This will be Sobotka’s third visit to the USA in his capacity as Czech prime minister.
During his first visit in the autumn of 2014, he attended the ceremonial unveiling of a bust of former Czech president Vaclav Havel in the Congress seat.
In September 2015, he took part in the New York summits on U.N. peace missions and on the fight against Islamic State.
