Prague, March 10 (CTK) – Czech Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka will visit both the East and West Coast of the United States during his forthcoming visit, take part in a nuclear summit and a Czech film festival and meet representatives of universities and expatriate community organisations, CTK has learnt.
The journey is yet to be discussed by the government.
Sobotka will start the week-long trip on March 30 in Washington where he will attend a nuclear security summit on the following two days.
On April 2, he will make a stop-over in Minneapolis in the Midwest and he will spend the rest of the visit in Los Angeles and San Francisco on the West Coast.
Sobotka will return to the Czech Republic on April 6.
The 4th nuclear security summit is staged by President Barack Obama. The major goal is to boost states’ commitments in nuclear security and to push through measures to prevent nuclear terrorism.
The event will be attended by top representatives from 53 countries and four international organisations.
Obama unveiled the idea of holding the summit in his speech he made in Prague in April 2009.
The participating states will approve a communique in which they will confirm their responsibility for the safety of nuclear materiel and nuclear facilities on their territories.
They will pledge to cooperate in ensuring the safety and in averting illicit trade in nuclear materiel.
Sobotka’s schedule includes participation in the opening of the annual film festival Czech That Film and decoration of selected personalities of Radio Free Europe.
Sobotka is to be accompanied by no more than 24 people. He has visited the United States several times since he was appointed prime minister in January 2014. During his first visit in the autumn of 2014, he was received by U.S. Vice-President Joe Biden in the White House.
In the Congress building, Sobotka took part in the unveiling of a bust of former Czechoslovak and Czech president Vaclav Havel (1936-2011).
