Prague, June 19 (CTK) – Offering a job in the civil service to Robert Slachta, the outgoing experienced chief of the anti-mafia police squad, by the police management would be a reasonable and advantageous step, Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka (Social Democrats, CSSD) told public Czech Television (CT) yesterday.
Slachta handed in his resignation last week in protest against the planned police restructuring, within which the elite police anti-mafia and anti-corruption squads are to merge.
The police reform caused a rift in the government coalition. Deputy Prime Minister Andrej Babis said his ANO movement may terminate the coalition agreement if Interior Minister Milan Chovanec (CSSD) signs the police reform, which Chovanec did earlier this week.
In a phone call from China where he is on an official visit, Sobotka told CT yesterday that police reforms should not be politicised and that he is not going to meddle into the work of the police president.
Babis said yesterday ANO does not plan to leave the government but wants to make changes in the coalition agreement. ANO wants to negotiate about the changes after Sobotka returns from China next week.
