Bratislava, Jan 27 (CTK) – Czech Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka (Social Democrats, CSSD) has got indirectly involved in the election campaign of Slovak PM Robert Fico (Smer-Social Democracy), Slovak daily Dennik N writes yesterday in reaction to the convoking of a top meeting on the migrant crisis by Sobotka.
On Tuesday, Sobotka announced that an extraordinary summit of the Visegrad Group (V4), including the Hungarians, Poles, Slovaks and Czechs, will be held in Prague on February 15, three weeks before the Slovak parliamentary election.
Dennik N writes that Fico will profit from the V4 summit because the summit will strongly support his effort to maintain the refugee threat as the main topic of the political fight before the March 5 elections. The summit will give Fico an opportunity to show that his views on migrants are shared by the whole Visegrad Group, the paper adds.
In convoking the summit, the rather reserved Sobotka seems to have a different motivation: such an activity will help him face the pressures on the Czech political scene, especially from the ANO movement of Finance Minister Andrej Babis and the CSSD wing that supports President Milos Zeman, the paper writes.
The European Union has failed to cope with the migrant crisis, but the declarations and steps of the V4 governments have not contributed to any solution, Dennik N writes.
All the statements and steps were meant for their voters and motivated by an effort to avoid dealing with the problem and make others responsible for it, “and the planned summit will be no exception,” the paper writes.
According to Dennik N, Turkey is not truly interested in cooperation in fighting the migrant crisis and Greece will not stop the refugees outside its territory due to the sea border.
Greece will bring the refugees on its territory and then it will do the same that all the V4 countries did – it will send the refugees further as soon as possible, Dennik N writes.
