Prague, Sept 15 (CTK) – The Czech motorway speed limit remains at 130 km/h and it will not be increased up to 150 km/h at some motorway sections, the Chamber of Deputies decided yesterday, accepting an amendment of the Senate that rejected the proposed raising of the maximum limit.
The Chamber originally proposed the raising of the speed limit on selected sections of motorways to 150km/h under suitable technical and construction conditions. In April, the Chamber passed the bill on roads that included this step.
President Milos Zeman said then he would veto the bill if the speed limit were raised to 150 km/h because he considered it irresponsible.
Transport Minister Dan Tok (for ANO) opposed the increased a speed limit as well, arguing that the Czech motorway network is not built for safe riding at such high speed.
However, the Chamber might have overridden both the Senate decision and Zeman’s veto.
The bill on roads is yet to be signed by the president into law.
The bill increases the maximum speed on selected first class roads from 90 to 110 km/h. It gives municipalities the right to sell vehicles that had to be towed away if their owners did not claim the vehicles within six months after the towing was announced to them. Municipalities will also be authorised to ban transit lorry transport from second and third class roads on their territory and impose fines on the violators.
