Prague, Jan 13 (CTK) – The Czech government will support Slovak Prime Minister Fico’s proposal to call a special EU summit on security in Europe over migration risks, Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka Sobotka (Social Democrats, CSSD) told journalists after a government meeting yesterday.
Sobotka said he presumed a joint European border guard should be on the agenda of the summit.
Christian Democrats (KDU-CSL, a minor coalition government party) said they were also for the special meeting of European leaders.
“The Czech Republic is ready to support this Slovak proposal to call a special European Council if this speeds up not only the preparation of a European border guard, but also further steps with which Europe must face the current migration crisis,” Sobotka said.
The issue was opened by KDU-CSL deputy chairman Marian Jurecka at the government meeting.
The party demanded that the government support the summit also due to the increasing sexual attacks in some European countries.
Jurecka said there was the threat that due to the permeable EU borders, the violence might spill over.
“We think that there is a need of discussing operational measures when it comes to the security inside Schengen and also the protection of its outer border,” Jurecka said.
Sobotka said the Christian Democrats’ efforts were in harmony with the government position.
Fico asked for the summit last week.
On Monday, he sent letters to this effect to Donald Tusk, chairman of the EU summits, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and representatives of the current Dutch EU presidency.
However, Tusk is not planning to call a special EU summit.
Migration will be on the agenda of the regular February summit, Tusk’s press service has said.
