Prague, Jan 28 (CTK) – The Czech police are checking the circumstances of Communist MEP Miloslav Ransdorf’s death on January 22, their spokesman Tomas Hulan told CTK yesterday, and Ransdorf’s aide said a forensic autopsy will be performed.
Ransdorf, a long-standing politician, died suddenly at the age of 62.
“We can confirm that we are checking the circumstances of Mr Ransdorf’s death, without any concrete conclusion for now,” Hulan said.
Ransdorf’s family previously demanded that the police launch an enquiry into the case.
Details about his death may me uncovered by an autopsy.
“I can confirm that a forensic autopsy will be performed, which would not disturb the ceremony,” Ransdorf’s assistant Helena Sucha told CTK yesterday, referring to his funeral due on Friday.
Sucha said she has no detailed information about the investigation.
Ransdorf’s funeral in Prague, financed by the Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia (KSCM), is to be attended by the party leaders and other politicians and foreign guests.
Ransdorf joined the Communist Party in 1972.
In the 1990s and the early 2000s, Ransdorf was a member of the Czechoslovak Federal Assembly and later of the Czech Chamber of Deputies. From 2004 on he was a member of European Parliament.
Last Friday, he was rushed unconscious to a Prague clinic, which however, did not specify his health trouble to the media.
Ransdorf suffered from diabetes and his condition reportedly deteriorated after his arrest in Switzerland in early December 2015.
The Swiss police detained him, together with three Slovaks, in a Zurich bank and prosecution was launched against them on suspicion of property delicts.
Ransdorf, who suspended his membership in the EP’s Left group over the case, dismissed any wrongdoing on his part.
