Prague, Jan 28 (CTK) – The Prague police dealt with 64,095 crimes on the territory of the Czech capital in 2015, the lowest number from 1991, and they solved one quarter of them like in 2014, deputy Prague police director Ivan Smekal said yesterday.
He said pickpocketing again dominated among the crimes, followed by theft of things from cars.
The number of 24 murders was four lower than in 2014. Two of them have not yet been cleared.
Compared with 2014, the number of revealed crimes in Prague dropped by 10.8 percent last year.
The crime rate has been decreasing in the capital for a long time, with the exception of 2013, when outgoing president Vaclav Klaus declared amnesty in January, after which some of the released prisoners returned behind bars.
Last year, Prague police solved a total of 16,227 crimes, which was 25.32 percent of the total and 0.79 percent more than in 2014. Foreigners were responsible for 23 percent of the crimes.
From 2000, the number of pick-pocketing cased in Prague did not drop below 7000 annually. Last year, it rose from 7078 to 8309 compared with 2014, Smekal said.
He said the pickpockets often focus on foreign tourists. “This is very unpleasant and it is in our interest that this type of crime be fundamentally reduced,” he added.
