Prague, Oct 8 (CTK) – Turnout in the October 7-8 regional elections in the Czech Republic was 34.6, which was 2.3 percent lower than four years ago, according to data released by the Czech Statistical Office (CSU) yesterday.
This year’s turnout is medium compared to previous polls.
The lowest turnout in the regional polls of 29.6 percent was in 2004 and the highest of 40.3 percent in 2008.
The regional polls attracted fewer voters than the last general election in 2013 in which 59.5 percent of voters took part.
However, turnout in the first round of the Senate elections, held simultaneously with the regional polls, was even lower – 33.5 percent.
In absolute figures, some 2.58 million inhabitants of the Czech Republic with a population of 10.5 million came to the regional elections, while four years ago it was 2.76 million.
The highest turnout of 38.5 percent was in the Zlin Region, south Moravia, and the lowest of 28.94 percent in the Usti Region, north Bohemia.
Turnout in the first regional elections in 2000 was 33.6 percent or some 2.4 million people.
The highest ever turnout of 96.8 percent was in the 1990 elections to the Czechoslovak Federal Assembly and the Czech National Council, the first democratic parliamentary elections after the 1989 collapse of the communist regime.
