Prague, March 14 (CTK) – The Czechs’ trust in the European Union and the European Parliament (EP) has dropped to an all-time low, or 29 and 24 percent, respectively, while 55 percent of people trust the United Nations and 52 percent NATO, according to a STEM poll released yesterday.
STEM has studied the Czechs’ trust in the EU since 1994, when it ranged between 50 and 60 percent. The last peak trust – 60 percent – was registered at the time of the Czech EU presidency in 2009.
Since then, the Czehcs’ trust in the EU has been decreasing, with a short-time improvement in 2013.
The development of trust in the EP has been similar. In 2009, it was trusted by half of respondents, but since then it has been decreasing with the exception of 2013.
Trust in the EU does not differ much according to education and age.
The highest trust is among supporters of the opposition conservative TOP 09. That of the government ANO movement and Christian Democrats’ (KDU-CSL) supporters was also above average.
Trust among supporters of the opposition rightist Civic Democrats (ODS) decreased the most against 2015.
Trust in NATO has been relatively stable, keeping at about 50 percent. Trust in the United Nations was almost 70 percent in 2005, later it ranged around 65 percent. It declined by 8 percent against 2015.
