Prague, Dec 4 (CTK) – Prague Archbishop Dominik Duka celebrated mass in the new German-speaking parish in the Roman Catholic Church of St John of Nepomuk in Prague-Nove Mesto yesterday.
Duka established the German parish as of October 1, 2016 since the German-speaking community in the Czech capital city increased. The step was also motivated by an effort to revive the traditional presence of the German culture in Prague, the Prague Archbishopric writes on its website.
The administrator of the German parish is Martin Leitgob who was the spiritual leader of the German-speaking Catholic community in Prague from 2012.
This community was founded in the early 1990s. It mostly includes people from Germany, Austria and Switzerland who work in Prague and their family members. German-speaking Catholics of Czech nationality also joined the community.
Apart from the German parish, there have been the Polish and Slovak parishes within the Prague Archdiocese. Moreover, English, Spanish and Vietnamese clerics operate in Prague and the French, Italian and Albanian communities are very active, too.
Ukrainians are mostly members of the Orthodox Church.
