Spindleruv Mlyn, East Bohemia, Sept 5 (CTK) – A memorial to the Germans executed in Spindleruv Mlyn in 1945 was unveiled Saturday on the site of the tragic events where there are probably also mass graves of the victims, Jakub Kaspar, deputy head of the Krkonose Mountains National Park (KRNAP) has said.
He said the exact number of the victims, killed by the Nikolai partisan group together with locals, is not known.
Kaspar said a list of 36 names was preserved, but there may have been more victims.
Around 100 Czechs and Germans took part in the unveiling of the memorial that was preceded by an ecumenical service.
Previously, there was an improvised place of commemoration to which people were bringing candles.
“It is reconciliation between us, Czechs, and the Germans who were our fellow citizens for centuries before the decade that broke everything arrived,” Kaspar said, referring to the events of the late 1930s and World War Two.
The memorial was initiated by inhabitants of that part of Krkonose, and the KRNAP Administration and the Heimatkreis Hohenelbe – Riesengebirge from Marktoberdorf in Bavaria also participated in the project.
