Prague, Nov 21 (CTK) – A crowd of over 200 people demanding that fur animal farms be banned in the Czech Republic crossed the centre of Prague Saturday and ended with the participants signing a petition addressed to lawmakers and highlighting the bad conditions in which fur animals live at farms.
“We are convinced that the maltreatment of animals due to a quite unnecessary fashion accessory, which fur is, has no place in the 21st century,” the petition, also addressed to Agriculture Minister Marian Jurecka, says.
It says the breeding of animals for fur has been directly or indirectly banned by ten European countries, and other countries plan to do so.
A recent public opinion poll showed that 68 percent of Czechs want fur animal farms to be banned, the petition says and calls on lawmakers to amend the animal protection law accordingly.
However, at its November session, the lower house´s committee for agriculture passed a resolution that does not recommend any changes concerning fur animal farms.
Saturday´s protest march took place at the beginning of the period of about five weeks during which thousands of fur animals will be skinned before Christmas, Marek Vorsilka, from the organising group Defenders of Animals, said.
To show their indignation at the animal maltreatment, the participants in the march, mainly young people, wore animal masks, carried banners and chanted slogans.
The protest was loud by no incidents occurred.
