Prague, June 23 (CTK) – Czech anti-corruption police have uncovered counterfeit gold bars within their investigation into the case of suspected half-billion-crown VAT evasion, the unit’s spokesman Jaroslav Ibehej told CTK yesterday, adding that the fakes will be shown to reporters at a press conference on Wednesday.
The case is being presented in the media in order to encourage possible further damaged people, who may have bought the counterfeit gold, to report to the police.
According to CTK’s information, the fakes are of so high a quality that a layman has no chance to distinguish them from genuine gold bars.
They are equipped with the producer’s certificate and their weight corresponds to the weight of real gold, though the bars are only gold-plated.
The police also uncovered the kiln in which the counterfeiters produced the fakes.
The police would not give details about the case pending the press conference due on Wednesday morning.
