Prague, Sept 21 (CTK) – A plaque commemorating the oldest known Jewish cemetery in Prague, which was abolished in 1478, will be unveiled in Vladislavova Street this afternoon, Dita Snajdrova, from the Jewish Community of Prague, has informed CTK.
Experts supposed that skeletal remains from the graves in the cemetery were deposited in the present Old Jewish Cemetery after the oldest one was abolished.
“However, skeletal remains were uncovered in archaeological excavations on the territory of the cemetery and this finding unleashed an avalanche of events which ended in the declaration of the site a cultural heritage sight in 2000,” Snajdrova said.
The remaining preserved graves are kept in a concrete casing beneath Vladislavova Street. A part of the remains have been relocated to the New Jewish Cemetery.
The ceremony yesterday will be attended by representatives from the Jewish Community and the World organisation for the protection of Jewish graves.
