Prague, Sept 30 (CTK) – Around 166,000 foreigners lived in the capital of Prague, with a population of some 1.2 million, in the middle of 2015 and their number has doubled in the past six years, according to an analysis released by authors of the Czech Republic in Data new project yesterday.
The figure includes people with a foreign citizenship who have an official residence in Prague.
The strongest group are Ukrainians, who make up about a quarter of foreigners in Prague, followed by Slovaks, Russians, Vietnamese, Americans and Chinese. The two last groups are of the same size. Over 3000 of each Bulgarians, Germans, Britons and Kazakhs live in Prague. Other nations make up almost 41,000.
“Foreigners do not concentrate in some areas dramatically,” said Ivana Pridalova, from the social geography and regional development chair of the Science Faculty of Charles University.
Most foreigners settle down in the districts where the majority population mostly lives, she added.
The highest number of Ukrainians as well as the Chinese and Vietnamese live on the outskirts on Prague, while Russians often seek residential districts around the city centre.
“On the contrary, foreigners from the countries west of the Czech Republic are most often registered in central localities and villa neighbourhoods. Social and economic status also plays a role in it,” Pridalova said.
More and more foreigners buy real estate, mainly flats, in the Czech capital. They have bought more than 20 percent of flats in new residential buildings, according to developers’ data.
Citizens of the former Soviet Union, for instance, buy hundreds of flats in Prague a year.
The Czech Republic in Data project is to release data on four topics a month.
The project’s partners are SAS the Czech Republic, Deloitte and Unicorn that provide tools for the data processing and visualisation.
The project will run for two years first. Next month it will release the analyses of European subsidies, football and access to health care.
