Prague, Nov 11 (CTK) – The Czech School Inspection considers the education on global issues more and more important regarding the current world´s requirements, and it plans to check how Czech schools have coped with the task, deputy chief school inspector Ondrej Andrys said yesterday.
The Inspection will complete the check in cooperation with the People in Need humanitarian group in the weeks to come, Andrys said at a conference named “Do we understand the present world?”.
The conference is held on the eve of the Global Education Week, an event that has been held all over Europe since 1999.
Andrys said the inspection wants to find out how children and youth get acquainted with global issues.
Using an electronic checking method, the inspectors will enquire into the methods and forms of teaching and cooperation between schools and NGOs.
In addition, the inspectors will visit selected schools in person.
People in Need director Simon Panek said only a small fraction of students are aware of issues such as NGO´s activities.
Children receive factual information. However, since nothing makes them absorb it or understand new aspects, the information in no way influences the values they adhere to, Panek said.
“We invest too little in helping children and young people understand these issues,” he added.
The participants in the conference agreed that the level of education on global issues and on the Czech Republic´s position in the present world mainly depends on particular head teachers.
It is necessary to explain that the task of the educational system is not only to prepare young people for their labour market entry, but also to enhance their civic activities, including by acquainting them with global issues, Andrys said.
The Global Education Week, which will start on November 14, will focus on the migrant crisis. The event includes discussions meetings, screenings and exhibitions.
