Jan Hamáček, Minister of the Interior for the Czech Republic, has instructed the Czech ambassador in Denmark to inquire with Danish officials about purchasing AstraZeneca vaccines that the Western European country has now written off as dangerous.  “Denmark has announced that it’s suspending the use of AstraZeneca vaccinations. I have instructed the Czech Ambassador in Copenhagen to contact the Danish authorities immediately and express the Czech Republic’s interest in purchasing all AstraZeneca vaccines from Denmark,” Hamáček said on Twitter.  Danish officials recently announced they would be withdrawing all 2.4 million doses of the vaccine until further notice. The Danish Health Authority (DAN) said that their studies had shown a higher than normal occurrence of negative effects like blood clots andContinue Reading

A positive result of a regular COVID-19 test can have negative effects on the child’s mental stability, according to the Olomouc clinical psychologist Adam Suchý. One child’s positive COVID-19 test result can send the whole class into quarantine which can provoke bullying of the “guilty” student. Currently, some students returned to schools with regular testing conditions in effect from April 12.  Suchý noted that after a year of lockdown, children are very excited to come back. They want to become a part of their social group again, but public testing and the possibility of negative results can make them feel isolated again. “Children have no physical problems, they feel healthy, most of them are looking forward to school for friendsContinue Reading

The new Minister of Health, Petr Arenberger, offers to establish another ban on mass gatherings which will allow only two people to meet outside. The current state of emergency will end this Monday, meaning that already up to 20 people can gather in the same place. Arenberger thinks that the Czech Republic is not ready for the new weakening of measures, and getting together in large groups of people might turn out to be a mistake. Also, he believes that the citizens will support him in this decision to introduce a new ban on mass gatherings. “Based on the unstable epidemiological situation, including the current first occurrence of the Brazilian P2 SARS-COV 2 mutation in the Czech Republic, it (theContinue Reading

Prime Minister Andrej Babiš confirmed that the current state of emergency won’t be extended after April 11. It was supposed to limit communication between districts of the Czech Republic. Only people with work confirmations were allowed to cross the borders. Another ban on movement doesn’t allow people to leave an apartment from 9 pm until 5 am. Those measures can’t be prolonged without theContinue Reading

Results from a new survey suggest that half of everyone who has been forced to start working from home because of COVID-19 restrictions is no longer enjoying it, and don’t consider it as a benefit.  Conducted by Czech IT services company System4U, over 1,400 people who have been doing home-office since March of 2020 were asked how they’ve been feeling about their work situation. It generally concluded that at least half of those surveyed were tired of working from home, and believed it was making them less productive and efficient. For example, many people said general communication between their team was becoming extremely difficult. “Surprisingly, a lot of companies with up to 50 employees don’t use video calls for teamContinue Reading

Forcing companies to test their employees for COVID-19 may not be going so well, as new data suggests half of all the positive results are in fact false positives. A new survey from the Food Chamber determined that companies are having a lot of trouble with the new testing regime because of the inaccuracy of the tests.  The manufacturers never guaranteed 100% accuracy, but companies are noticing a theme where the antigen tests are coming up positive, only to be proven wrong later when the employee takes a PCR test.  Miroslav Koberna, head of the Food Chamber, said that 141 companies participated in the survey, and the results show that nearly half of all those that tested positive were notContinue Reading

“Wow, look at that!” I exclaim as I enter Zack’s room, and there is the church at Náměstí Míru staring at me from behind the window. It looks more prominent than ever. Zack laughs: “one of the reasons I moved to Prague is ‘cause the cost of living is great compared to New York City, where I grew up. I wouldn’t be able to afford anything like this anywhere in New York doing what I’m doing. I would have to be a lawyer or a doctor… And here, I can literally live off of busking if I have to,” he explains while his dog Cashew runs around and I scan the room. “So, here’s where the magic happens?” I point out the recording equipment scatteredContinue Reading

The director of Dvůr Králové Zoo says that without any visitors or relief money, the zoo will be forced to start selling and/or euthanizing the animals that they can no longer afford to feed and take care of. Přemysl Rabas, who heads the zoo in Hradec Králové, says that killing zoo animals is obviously an extreme thing to do, but the COVID-19 restrictions are leaving him with no other choice.  “Some animals will have to be moved to other zoos around the world while others will just have to be killed. It’s an absolutely extreme solution, but the current situation is slowly pushing us in that direction.” Rabas says the only solution, besides being allowed to open the zoo, isContinue Reading
